Led by Mara Skujeniece, Studio Skujeniece designs furniture and interior products. Central to Mara’s work which takes much of its inspiration from her Latvian origins, is the tactility of material, honesty in expression and a well thought-out process.

Matthew Shlian è un ingegnere della carta, ma il suo approccio all’arte dell’origami è al confine con la filosofia e con la scienza:

Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawings and three dimensional forms. I use my engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture which have lead to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. We work on the nanoscale, translating paper structures to micro origami. Our investigations extend to visualizing cellular division and solar cell development. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principals; I see their inquiry as basis for artistic inspiration.

Le sue sculture sono complesse e semplici allo stesso tempo, e non si limitano all’origami ma abbracciano anche l’intaglio ed il mondo dei paper automata.
Mi piace tantissimo la serie City Cut: geniale l’idea di realizzare biglietti kirigami usando stampe di paesaggi, che completano l’intaglio creando bellissimi effetti.
Il sito è pieno di spunti ed idee interessanti, c’è parecchio da esplorare tra disegni, video e musica.

My sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. [...] Paradox and surprise are integral in my choice of materials. Quantities of industrially manufactured objects are used to create flexible forms reminiscent of the organic shapes of animals and nature. [...] To make the pencil sculptures, I take hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together. (…)

San Francisco artist Agelio Batle’s Drawing Hand is both a poetic metaphor and a functioning drawing tool; all of its surfaces can write. Committed to making art from materials that are part of daily experience, the artist originated this work by casting his own hand (Drawing Hand No.1) in pencil lead, graphite, each day for the calendar year 1999.
